1960: Connie Francis made her acting debut when filming began on the movie ''Where the Boys Are.''

1962: John Lennon and Cynthia Powell got married in Liverpool, England. She filed for divorce in 1968.

1977: Comedian Groucho Marx died in Los Angeles. He was 86.

1981: Mark David Chapman was sentenced to 20 years to life in prison for the shooting death of John Lennon in New York.

1986: Paul Simon's ''Graceland'' LP was released.

1987: The film ''Dirty Dancing'' made its world premiere in Los Angeles.

1988: Country singer Nat Stuckey died in Nashville, Tenn., of lung cancer.

1992: Sting and his longtime girlfriend Trudie Styler got married in England. It was his second marriage, her first.

1994: Boyz II Men released their album ''II.''

2000: Comedian Ellen DeGeneres and actress Anne Heche announced they were breaking up.

2001: Singer Aaliyah and eight others died in a plane crash shortly after takeoff in the Bahamas. Aaliyah was 22.
