The overrated characters are ones that the fans have loved but the writers definitely steered them towards a different direction. After all of these years, I'm not surprised that it happened. But the underrated characters...I like Hank and Lou since they are hilarious and sometimes I wish they had a larger role on the show. Kearney is cool too.

Judging by the lack of comments, my theory that no one gives a crap about The Simpsons anymore is true.

Underrated:
1. Moe Syzlak: consistently the funniest character on the show, second only to "old Homer" (ie. as he was written roughly season 3 through season 5)
2. Agnes Skinner: her bullying and browbeating of hapless son Seymour source of endless laughs.
3. Lionel Hutz: one of Phil Hartman's great characters (wow does the show miss that guy). Always took second billing to Troy Maclure, but he had some fabulous moments as well.
4. Hans Moleman: "Man getting hit in the groin by a football". Need I say more?
Overrated:
1. Dr Hibbert: has this character EVER been funny? I dont get him and dont understand the shows's infatuation with him.
2. Seymour Skinner: shows that center around him almost always fall flat (eg. the infamous "Arman Tamzarian" episode)
3. Reverend Lovejoy: another of Harry Shearer's characters that doesn't really fit into the energy of the show.
4. Itchy and Scratchy: never understood the appeal.
