I think if he was not in condition for his last performance due to health or condition that allowed him to not be able to perform live in voice, then it is his right to give his performance in the mannor he did. Movies, and all of the holograms that are used are accepted by the media and audiences for uses of the hollywood magic, so why not him? He still gave a live performance in every way that was probably harder getting it all together. And last but not least, he gave a performance that the audience will never feel again that gave honor to Italy. No one will ever be graced by his presence live again. If he was caught in the act than maybe at that time it would have been disappointing, but he did infact pull it off and WOW what a performance it truly was for him.

One has got to put it in context. To put it simply...in reality, he was without peer. To mime a performance at the end of his professional career; near the end of his life...does not diminish him; nor does it diminish the gift that he shared: his singing.
