Tom CruiseWith a ban in Germany on the horizon, scientology has come under severe media scrutiny and public debate in recent years. Ever since Tom Cruise defamed Brooke Shields during post-partum-depression-gate '07, the quasi-religion has been a heated topic. It's been called an oppressive cult. A money-guzzler.

Sarah Lavery asks; "why do so many public faces flock to the Scientology church's doors?" Well, ask the people who do it. They say it has cured learning disabilities, has saved their lives, etc. They have found value in it, that's why. I'm not a public face, you don't have to be a public face to try something out. I studied and found it its methods are easily applied in day to day life. My income increased, my enjoyment of life increased, I communicated better, etc. But it requires understanding the printed word on the page, you can't read about it and understand it. You have to actually study it to understand it.

"They say" it has cured learning disabilities. "They say" it has saved their lives. Hmmmm. Actually you said that. And that's the beauty of the internet, you can say anything. I find Hubbard's work in turns mirth-inducing and incredibly dull. My favorite book of Elron's? "A History of Man". A masterpiece of unintended hilarity. If you can read it with a straight face, have I got a religion for you . . .

For every famous Scientologist out there singing the praises of Scientology, there are tens of thousands of every day Scientologists also singing the religion's praises. Scientology is a wonderful religion and philosophy. One of my favorite books on Scientology is called "The Phoenix Lectures", which provides a great description of Scientology's spiritual roots. A Hindu/Scientologist put up a few of the chapters of the book here:

A great book (and set of lectures) which I highly recommend.

I was in the cult for 24 years and trained in their advanced mental therapy. After I woke up and escaped, I no longer felt the need to "sing the praises of Scientology."

Gee........the celebrities mentioned are all
GOOD PEOPLE. No drugs, alcohol abuse or unethical
behaviors being reported in the media, which we all know would be the thing reported.
What does that tell you?

Great article. Indeed, scientology should rather play it lowest rather than trying every time to infiltrate governments, to buy ads, and to change things - but only their apparence.

IMO stop drinking the cool aid. The world does not need another religion, especially one that run by the likes of Tom Cruise, I mean Tom is like the pope of scientology right, just step back and think about that for a second.

Oh tsk, tsk, Artoo. Tom Cruise said: "Scientology cured my learning disability" at: http://www.beliefnet.com/story/129/story_12944_1.html
and Lisa Marie Presley said: "Scientology saved my life and my sanity many times". John Travolta and other celebrities have made similar statements. Even critical websites quote celebrities' saying these sorts of things. And what did I say? I said; listen to what people who do it, say about it. And added that I found it very helpful.

Ms. Lavery writes eloquently on anti-Semitism and appears passionate about tolerance for minorities of all types in her college newspaper articles. Here, she writes like a different person!
