James BrolinThe ex-wife of Barbra Streisand's husband James Brolin is recovering in hospital after a bizarre traffic accident. Actress Jan Smithers, a star of beloved TV sitcom WKRP In Cincinnati, was driving naked when she stopped for help after her car broke down on a remote California highway in the middle of the night.

I have known Jan for 15 years. She is a warm and wonderful woman. For this type of thing to happen is very upsetting. To be hit be a truck at any time would be horrifying, let alone when you are apparently stark naked in the middle of the night. She is obviously unwell, if you can believe what you read in The Enquirer (unlikely) and very distressed.
She was very close to her father and having a child move away to college is also very stressful.
Why don't you guys lighten up and try to help her instead of sniggering behind her back? Send her well-wishes and hope for a speedy recovery. Pray this doesn't happen to you ...

I have fond memories of Jan from her days as Bailey on "WKRP" and wish her Godspeed. She is in my prayers.

Jan is my cousin and although I haven't seen her for many years I have fond memories of her kindness to my when I was younger. I am grieved to hear of this occurance and wish her harmony and balance and peace of mind. Anyone who finds her distress amusing is obviously a loser.

Thing here just don't add up. Jan is reported as not having any head injury, but she doesn't have any memory of the event. She allegedly stopped to ask for help with a disabled car, but police found her car in perfect working order. How would anyone know that she stopped for assistance with her car, unless they asked her before running her over??? I think she was drugged, (date rape drug), stripped, and put in her car on the spot. She woke up enough to stagger for help, but she knew she shouldn't try to drive in that condition. She staggers out in front of a trucks and gets hit. How does that scan? It is not her fault by any means and police should be looking for a suspect. The printed story does not hold water.

i enjoyed watching jan on wkrp,she was so uplifting,her smile brighten my day, i wish her well and wish she could come back to tv, reruns are nice,it would be great too see her in something new and fresh.

I recently saw a rerun of WKRP and it was the first time I'd seen the show since it was on prime time. It was good to see Jan Smithers again. She always had a spark to her on the screen, just like the spark of the 1966 Newsweek cover. The 60's teen aura was captured perfectly in that photo. I decided to Google her to find out the usual "whatever happened to" and was very sorry to hear about her accident last year. I agree totally with "fredw" who suspects a date rape drug. His comments made a lot of sense to me. I hope Jan is doing better. Again, very sorry to hear about that accident. We wish you all the best, Jan.

Since Ms Smithers was under heavy emotional stress I'm just wondering if she took a pill(s) to help her sleep, like Ambien, or an antidepressant like Cymbalta. Medications like the latter have side effects like sleepwalking and memory lapses.
Whatever the cause, I wish her a speedy recovery. My blessings to her and to her family.
P.S. I love to see her again on TV.

It still bothers me that this story is totally fishy. How does the writer know that Jan stopped for help when she can't remember the incident. Who told the writer that? Who could have known? Add to that the fact that her car was in perfect working order. Something is very wrong with this story and I think someone is trying to smear Ms. Smithers image and they are resorting to dirty tricks to do it. Jan has a lot of fans and we have to speak out and support her at such times. Perhaps she doesn't want publicity, but we should know that someone is taking this seriously and trying to determine what really happened. I think the incident is a result of a crime with Ms. Smithers as the victim and it's a crime with serious consequences.

OK there is news! A comment has been posted in Ms Smithers name at, and it says she was never naked that night and was hit by a small pickup truck. She and her family are all well now. That's such a relief to hear. I hope it was indeed her and it's true. It certainly makes more sense than that other trash.
