NBC.Com To Offer Users Free, Ad-Supported Downloads Of Popular Shows

30 RockNBC.com today announced the launch of its new service, "NBC Direct," which will allow users to download and view NBC's popular primetime and late-night entertainment programming on their desktops for up to one week after broadcast.

Interestingly, I just received this press release from a year in the future...
NBC Universal is announcing the closure of NBC Direct, citing low usage. Consumers want media on their terms, said Joe Schmoe, not another desktop-bound piece-of-junk DRM media viewer. NBCU also announced the end of $5 a-pop individual, ownable downloads as no one took them up on that ideas either. Apple CEO Steve Jobs was quoted as saying, "sure we'll take them back (NBCU), but only at 99 cents an episode."

NBC is nuts. iTunes is easy and convenient for countless millions of iPod users. People are not going to go in large numbers to another site to download.
If the cost of TV shows was dropped to 99¢ on iTunes, I'd probably drop my cable and buy everything online. But not if the shows are elsewhere.
