just fyi, the first wave of PS3s had either a 30 ($499) or a 60 ($599) gb HDD and IS backward compatible with PS1 and PS2 games, and it also has 4 USB/controller ports, along with everything else you already mentioned about the slim. They dropped the backward compatibility for the 2nd wave, which were 40 gb and 80 gb models with only 2 USB ports.
My guess is that people just don't really care about he backward compatibility (I know I don't) because once you play a PS3 game you're not going back to PS2 games.
My guess is that in a year or so Sony will announce that they're discontinuing production of PS2s and publishers will slowly stop producing games for it also.
These things are gonna fly at $299.
