With the sole exception of Star Trek, as soon as you tell me Bana's in a film I make plans to avoid it at all costs. He's a highly overrated actor. And I don't think that's saying much to begin with. Fortunately his role was kind of minimal in Trek, mainly because his story arc was kind of secondary to the focus on character introductions and origins.

@Agent Smith: I think I've seen Bana in, what, ten films now this summer?

Sigh. The book is this really dark and complex metaphor for loss, relationships, marriage and aging etc. It seems like they distilled it into its simplest form. Bana is all wrong for the part. Henry is supposed to be dark and witty and fascinating, not buff and bland and affable. Sigh again.
Anyway, the book is worth reading. It's probably my favorite book. Nothing's ever moved me as much, I can tell you that for sure. I'm seeing it tonight and will review it on my blog - it may be called "Dear Robert Schwentke - piss up a rope", or something.

@inflammatorywrit: I mean, it's OK. But, see, like I mentioned, I think fans of the book aren't going to love this. You're probably right about Bana.

As someone who loveloveloved the book, your review confirms my scaredness in seeing the movie. To echo inflammatorywrit, in the book, the love story was so non-cheesy and both characters were well-fleshed out. I recommend everyone read the book, before you judge the movie.

@dinahshore: It doesn't work that way, though. A movie should be able to stand on it's own, no? Unfortunately, none of the characters are really fleshed out for the film.

@mike, that's very true.I guess I meant, "read the book before you judge the STORY." ie. the far-fetchedness of the plot. you can judge the movie all you want.

I read the book, and loved it. I am very wary about seeing the film, don't think I will bother!
