I feel like I'm the only person on the planet who thinks "Saving Private Ryan" is totally overrated. Yeah, I'll give it the first 1/2 hour, but after that the story was just weak. It's like a two-hour film that was made as an excuse for making the first 35 minutes or so.

Christy Lemire of the Associated Press probably hated all of these.

I'm really half and half about SPR - and I don't disagree about the first half hour. Some love it, some hate it and I thought it deserved a place on here.

Knew a gentleman (now deceased) that was in that stalag and helped dig the tunnel. The Great Escape was crap according to him. Too many of these choices reflect the dimwitted american view of the war.

Agent Smith, I'm the same way about The Thin Red Line. I don't get it and can't believe the rating it has on RT. I found it long, boring, and meandering. Gettysburg was longer but better paced and didn't seem as long.

WTF? The Big Red One was not black & white. How we supposed to take a list seriously if the writer obviously didn't see the movie.

Really these are movies I should see? With the exception of Stalingrad I've seen them all. TRL put me to sleep. I agree with SPR being over rated. I can't seriously take a list about WWII movies I should see without Patton on it.

OskRedAxe? Every time I've watched The Big Red One, it was in black and white.

An unknown person with bomb planted in a car collided forcefully Pakistan army convoy at a checkpoint in northwest region of the country. Twenty seven people were killed. More than sixty persons developed injuries. A deputy of Pakistan’s top Taliban leader took responsibility for the gruesome incident. Hake mullah Meshed, the Taliban commander who took a pledge earlier this month on behalf of the press to carry out suicide attacks to show their anger on the withdrawal of Pakistan troops from the border region and for putting an end to CIA missile strikes has done as he had said. He also gave a warning that there are more such incidents to follow until USA ends missile attacks targeted at tribal areas of Pakistan.

To clarify the BIG RED ONE debate, the opening scenes (only a few minutes long) showing Lee Marvin as a soldier at the end of World War I are in B & W; the REST of the film is definitely in color. I have not seen the movie with its additionalfootage; I will have to check it out. I have always been disappointed with that movie. The performances are fine, and many scenes are beautifully filmed, but the combat sequences are too contrived and unrealistic (even by 1980 standards) for a big-budget, big-screen epic. They are too reminiscent of cheap television productions of the time. I would have included STALAG 17 and THE BATTLE OF BRITAIN on this list! DAS BOOT as the # 1 pick is bang-on! WWII buffs might want to check out my new novel, THE FUHRER VIRUS. It is a fictional spy/conspiracy/thriller for adult readers and can be found at www.eloquentbooks.com/TheFuhrerVirus.html, www.amazon.com, www.barnesandnoble.com, and on Google Review.
Thanks!

Thank you for the list and reviews! In addition to your list I would suggest Band of Brothers, Patton, The Pianist, The last days of the third reich...
