Gail Simone writes Secret Six, which is one of the best comics out these days.
However, you also have female characters like the Wasp. Pretty much treated as Marvel's punching bag (once, literally, by hr husband) before being put out of her misery in both of Marvel's universes.

@Squints - I know, Secret Six is so fantastic. She has such a great sense of humor. The Wasp ... I honestly can't believe they planned to make an Ant-Man movie. Were they going to add in his wife beating ways?
@PussyKat - Ha! They may do that, mate, they've been doing GI Joe and Transformers, why not!

I grew up reading Wonder Woman comics that my parents had bought for my older sister. Maybe as a result, she's one of my favorite characters. But she's hard to do well (really only two writers have written her well: Marston occasionally, and Perez often).
The movie wasn't one of the times she was well-handled. Never mind that Steve Trevor was kind of unlikable (compare with the JLU version), that Diana herself was, too, and the the animation was unappealing.
My little sister, almost as much a Wonder Woman fan as I, had the same opinion when we happened to see it. I'm not surprised it didn't do well. Perhaps they'd have been better off more-or-less* directly adapting Perez's "Gods and Mortals".
*It would be nice to have Steve be set up as a potential future love interest, more like the JLU and golden age versions of the character.
