A settlement that size is indicative of an error that did NOT almost kill anyone. I am very familiar with the uses of heparin (I have given it literally thousands of times) and I know that the harm was kept to a minimum by virtue of the use in this case being "packing"(filling the tubes)of an IV line. Only a very small amount if any actually circulates into the bloodstream. It is, of course, VERY lucky this was the use and not an actual circulating dose being given for anticoagulation...now THAT could have been disasterous! It is absolutely correct that the hospital had to offer a token settlement and to put more saftey checks in place and severely reprimand the nurse in question. This could have been a truly tragic event.

My real question is "why does Oprah have to get involved?!" Is she a lawyer, a physician with knowledge of the situation, a pharmaceutical representative or a hospital administrator?" She is always getting her nose in other people's business and she doesn't even know the first iota of what actually happened. I am happy for the children that they are safe and, at least, healthy, but Oprah always seems to turn someone else's tragedy into her own personal circus where she's the ring leader and she parades the involved on her show as if they were trained animal acts.

Doctors and nurses screw up all the time - they just keep it quiet, in the "family". With regard to the Quaid situation, they got caught and it got out, but a $500,000 pay off should not have been acceptable. I hope they clean house and get rid of those incompetents and those only working for a pay check.
