They are Irish, and they live in the Republic of Ireland not the UK, the Republic is not a part of Britain and so British law does not apply there. The Republic has no civil union law at the moment altho all of it's political parties support some sort of "civil" recognition of same sex relationships, some go as far as full equality and so marriage but this looks unlikely in the short term.

Hey SOME_GIRL
you hit the nail on the head, the above story doesnt mention Ireland once, not even to point out all three are Irish and at least Steven and Eamon live in Dublin.
The couple would like to get married in Ireland but it is the Irish government forcing them to travel, nothing to do with the British, above story is inaccurate,
www.independent.ie has the better version.
But as a whole well done lads, pity they have to travel at all, or more pity they haven't the option.........

Eamon, just be thankful you can get married. If you were in OTHER parts of the world you would be dead! before you finished that statement.

Ireland is independent and not a part of the commonwealth, but Northern Ireland is a part of the UK.
The Independent article states that Steven was opening an exhibit at a Dublin gallery but nowhere did it say anything about where the couple calls home.
