Tough call on Penn.
Hollywood loves gay roles, so he's got that going for him; but then some voters could be influenced by Penn's recent buddy-buddy relationship with Hugo Chavez.

Oh, and the Oscars are no different from the Globes, they're a sham too.
It's all for publicity to get people to go see the films that are still in the theater and buy the DVDs when they come out; as the DVDs of Oscar winners are usually out within a month after the awards. And they're also so people in the industry can just pat each other on the back.

@Agent Smith: Yeah, but the Globes don't even try to hide how shady they are. At least the Oscar voters are actually a part of the film industry.

I think Rourke should win this award. Yes, the gay theme would lead one to think the story line is better than... say... a washed-up wrester. But that is exactly the beauty of Mickey's performance. Not anyone would have made this role into such a big film. You could put anyone in the lead role of Milk and they would be considered for this award (no offense to Penn, he is a great actor). Mickey made this movie what it is by transforming a (silly?) story about a wrestler into a heart-wrenching story.
and Mike, the Penn's Steelers comment gave me a laugh... I hope you didn't spend too much time working it into your article.

@rob who had a broken foot: yeah, I'm still a bit bitter about that, too.

@Billy Chapel: I agree, Rourke *should* win but, unfortunately, I don't think he will.

@grimoneus: I loved him in "Frost/Nixon." Other than Rourke, my favorite preformance of the year.

I haven't seen either performance but my money is on Rourke. Hollywood loves a comeback even more than a gay rights role. Also, I always enjoy seeing "Crash" get ripped. Average movie at best.

Sorry guys...I liked Crash. Saw it on DVD when I was on vacation a couple months after it won. I really had no expectations, and haven't watched it since...but I did like it.

Traffic was great. Is Crash similar at all?

Crash was a decent movie, but it was not an award-winning movie. Saving Ryan's Privates is a classic.

@Blues Lover: "Traffic" was fine but a bit congested. "Crash," on the other hand, was quite jolting and hard to look away from, but in the end a tragic result.
