Is It OK To Dislike Caddyshack?

CaddyshackCaddyshack isn't that good, and it's not very funny. If you're 9 out of 10 red blooded American men, that last sentence just infuriated you like I just made slanderous remarks about your grandmother.

LOL. I couldn't understand why some of my friends found it hilarious, either.

Lob all "verbal grenades and cannon fire" in Matt's direction?
Wrong, lob nuclear assault using the entire world's arsenal combined in Matt's direction.

The list of movies at the end are all definitely classics that can be put in the same class as Caddyshack, but are not necessarily better.
But The 40-year-old Virgin? That's a disgrace to that list.
And Old School and Tropic Thunder should be on that list also.

I recall that one recent major network poll listed it among the best sports films ever. I have not seen it so I cannot judge. For those who have, of course it is okay not to have liked it. It is all about golf, no? To some degree, I suspect one would have to like (or at least know a lot about) the sport to "get" the humor in the film. I will add, however, that Chevy Chase and Bill Murray are ingenious comics. They could easily attract fans who do not like golf but do like them and their work.

Parton--its not about as much golf as one would think. Everyone needs to watch it at least once.

There is a foul man named Marcus.
Who is always creating a fracus.
His comments are mean, his intellect lean,
He needs a good kick in the tuckus.

I appreciate everyone who came by to comment.
Chunky: Ha! Brief and to the point. I like it.
Blues: Thanks, but it looks like it's just you and me, buddy . . .
Squints: YES! Or the Kenny Loggins song. Ugh!
Agent: Yikes. Well any press is good press, right? But nukes? That might be bad.
Guy: It was my sister she was pregnant with, but I'll admit that was a clever comment on your part. : )
Marcus: Loser? Really? I still say it's not that funny.
Alter: Thanks for coming by, but just about everyone in the world including critics thinks 40-Year-Old Virgin is better than Old School - funnier, smarter, more developed characters, BUT to each his own, right? You could have your own site where you say it sucks, and you'd be responding to 21 comments of people hating your guts like I am right now. That's the beauty of art and America.

Dutch: I don't get how this is filler. Wouldn't it be filler if I did an article saying it was funny, the more popular opinion. Thanks for coming by and expressing your opinion, but I think your wording is poorly chosen.
Taly: Yes. And not funny ones. Had they called it Groundskeeper and focused more on Bill Murray, they might have had something. Oh, and don't get me started on that gopher! I'm a little embarrassed I forgot to address him in this piece. Darn!
Luv: Well, I'd say so, but there are 21 commenters here that might beg to differ.
Angelina: Well said. That line comes during the only extended screen time with Bill and Chevy, and yes, it's a good one.
Corona; Thanks, but I refuse to say Caddyshack is a classic. I'll acknowledge some classic lines, but that's it. Thanks for coming by.
John: Thank you! Hey, Starpulse, can you mail this guy a prize or something?
Parton: I could think of a lot of sports films better than this one, but my favorite one is Bull Durham. That movie understood baseball more than any other movie, it was funny, sexy, brilliant. Caddyshack just blows! Ahhh. Sorry .. . . Calming down . . .
Jenna: Second one is BRUTAL!
Layla 666, and 2sug: I needed some people coming to my defense at the end of these comments. I didn't like that he called me a loser, but that's what I expected when I published this thing. Do losers sell out three straight nights of their first play in Chicago? htp://www.woodsugars.com

This article makes several good points. Caddyshack is a movie desperately seeking an identity. The flick attempts to carry a somewhat sincere theme with Danny Noonan, a likable individual ostensibly trying to succeed, but is surrounded with people making complete fools of themselves through immature antics, irreverence, and no shortage of slapstick "humor" schticks. The scene where the Spaulding picks his nose and "eats" was positively disgusting and needed to remain on the cutting room floor. Oh well, at least the ending provided continuity: a stupid ending to a stupid movie. As for Swanson's take on other movies, Animal House and Wayne's World are essentially in a similar vein, overrated and only sporadically humorous, and both in fact put me to sleep.
