Good observations, Shannon. I love Grey's but hate Private Practice. And Heroes is so bad right now...sniff.

"Grey's features strong, career-driven female characters".
This is news to me ! Meredith - strong ? The whiniest, most neurotic Ally McBeal clone on primetime TV. She still whines even now she's finally with McDreamy. Christina used to be kickass, no longer. As for Izzie ! Even Bailey is no longer the character she was.
The nearest character to the one you describe is Hahn, and we know what happened to her !
The criticisms you attach to Private Practice are more pertinent to Greys IMO. That show is far more guilty of bed-hopping and whining about relationships than I've ever seen on Private Practice. It is one incestuous tangle of relationships which the characters continually moan about. As Christina said to Meredith "SHUT UP" with the whining.
Private Practice has improved greatly since last season and Addison is back to her usual kickass self. Her transformation last year whilst out-of-character was actually realistic which I know is a novelty on a Shonda Rhimes show. IMO the characters are far more mature and grown-up than the whinings of the Greys lot, for which I am thankful.

Chloe2008 -
I'm with you on one point: I should have amended my quote about Greys' "strong" female characters to say "with the exception of Meredith Grey" who, agreed, is without a doubt one of the most insufferable. self-indulgent and painfully self-absorbed characters on that show or any other.
We agree to disagree on Christina Yang (still a strong, interesting character in my book), the marvelous Bailey and another tough cookie, Callie Torres. Yes, inappropriate and prolongued discourse on relationships is a Rhimes hallmark so both shows are guilty; however, the Greys' women are characters for whom medicine is as important - if not more - than their personal lives (which often suffer because of that fact).
With the Private Practice gals, I can't help but feel they're play-acting at being career professionals in between ducking into the conference room to kvetch (the men aren't much better, imo).
Also, for me, Addison is still far from the "kickass" character she once was. Finally, I feel that Greys' Anatomy, despite its faults, is a more compelling show overall.
Thanks to everyone for reading; keep your comments coming - I love hearing your two cents!
