On Monday, Patrick Stewart became the latest celebrity to carry the Olympic torch. He carried the beacon through the streets of south London ahead of the launch of the London 2012 Games on Friday.

Locals in Croydon cheered on the former "Star Trek" star, who explained, "I have attended world premieres of big movies that have not had the excitement and the sense of pleasure and pride that people are exhibiting today
"The great thing is it's the first day of the school (summer) holidays and so all the children are out. It was thrilling, I shall never forget today."

Stars including Muse, James McAvoy and Melanie Chisholm have also carried the torch on its journey around the U.K.

Stewart recently voiced a character in the popular animated film "Ice Age: Continental Drift."
