Brian Culbertson's 'Dreams' Soars

June 12th, 2012 10:42am EDT
Dreams
Brian Culbertson is one of smooth jazz's best and brightest - which also raises my expectations for each album he puts out. Even by that high standard, new album Dreams is a success.

Dreams (released today) has that same funky, velvety-smooth sound that has made Culbertson so successful. He's consistently turned out the kind of music that you can easily lose yourself in. Take, for example, the album's second track "No Limits." It features guest vocals by Stokley Williams and is a perfect song for date night. It's the latest soulful, romantic ballad that Culbertson's become very good at, no...

CD Review: Losprophets - 'Weapons'

June 5th, 2012 9:59pm EDT
Lostprophets
For the most part Weapons is a record you’d expect from Lostprophets; not exactly safe, but more familiar if anything. By this point in their career, 15 years and five albums, it’s clear this band is very comfortable in their own skin, and are adept at playing to their strengths like putting to wax, a record in Weapons comprised of a heaping helping of pristine radio ready rock tunes brimming with huge choruses and anthemic vocals that make it near impossible to not sing-a-long, cuts here served up in spades (“Another Shot,” “Jesus Walks,” “A Little Reminder That I’ll Never Forget”). Weapon...

The Rundown: Xiu Xiu, Useless ID, the Used, Halestorm, Fall From Grace

May 30th, 2012 9:22pm EDT
The Rundown
This edition of the Review Rundown features reviews from Xiu Xiu, Useless ID, the Used, Halestorm, and Fall From Grace.

File Under: Irreverent Dissonance (Huh?)

Xiu Xiu – Always (Polyvinyl/Bella Union): Xiu Xiu frontman and brainchild Jaime Stewart sets the manic depressive rollercoaster into motion right from the get-go on the bands eighth studio album Always, an album that should effectively entertain as many people as it enrages, most notably with the incredibly controversial track “I Luv Abortion,” which boasts the lyric set ‘When I look at my thighs I see death/It's great!/I love abo...

The Rundown: Black Oxygen, Dee Snider, Keith Moody, Sharks, Janus

May 30th, 2012 6:42am EDT
The Rundown
This edition of the Rundown features reviews of the latest releases from Black Oxygen, Dee Snider, Keith Moody, Sharks and Janus.

File Under: Balls-Out Rock

Black Oxygen - The American Dream: If you’re into guitar solos, here are two words you need to become very familiar with very fast – Black Oxygen. Scratch that – five words – Black Oxygen – the American Dream. The debut from these Kansas City natives is no song and dance, it’s not a dog and pony show, it’s a true blue rock album with guitars at the forefront, an album that makes no bones about putting the bands six-string assets in th...

Justin Bieber Nails New Single 'Boyfriend' - Listen! (Audio)

March 26th, 2012 10:30am EDT
Justin Bieber Cover Art
After impatiently waiting for more than two weeks for Justin Bieber’s brand new single, “Boyfriend”, the track was finally released at 12:00 AM this morning and is already climbing the charts (like we didn’t see that one coming). Oh! Did I mention it’s given me multiple eargasms?

The single features a more mature and versatile vocal performance than we’ve ever seen from the Biebs—mixing high and low melodies, whispers and some sick rap verses:

“Tell me what you like, yeah, tell me what you don’t. I could be your buzz light year, fly ya across the globe. I ain’t never wanna fight, yeah, yo...

authority zero
The 53th edition of the review Rundown houses some reviews of new releases from Authority Zero, Bleeding Through, Lacuna Coil, Scream Out Loud, and Hit the Lights.

File Under: Punk Gone Dark

Authority Zero - Less Rhythm, More Booze (Suburban Noize): Authority Zero’s new acoustic offering, Less Rhythm, More Booze rings true to form on both accounts – this new slate of acoustic cuts do tone done the rhythm due to the power outage, and also ramp up the boozy factor just a bit. Opening with a new song in “Liberateducation,” which features an enjoyable reggae/ska lean, Less Rhythm, More Booze ...

James Morrison
Here we are – No. 50. Can you believe it? The 50th edition of the Review Rundown. Well, 49 down and a hell of a lot more to go – it’s hard to believe that the RR has covered 245 records – but that’s in the past because here’s five more. This landmark review rundown features reviews of releases from James Morrison, Seven Circle Sunrise, Fake Figures, Blessed by a Burden, and Moksha.

File Under: Soulful Singer/Songwriter

CD Review: Slash - 'Made In Stoke 24/7/11'

December 23rd, 2011 3:52pm EST
Slash
They say timing is everything. Isn’t it ironic that Slash, former Guns N’ Roses guitar virtuoso, would release his first ever solo live album, Made in Stoke 24/7/11, during a time in which his former day job band is back touring the States? That’s probably more calculated than it is a coincidence, but regardless, this double disc live release is a more than proper representation of what Slash is capable live, one that reflects a pretty good timeline of all the bands that at one time signed Slash’s paychecks.

Made in Stoke 24/7/11 is a mix of tunes from Guns N’ Roses, Slash’s Snakepit and V...
