TV on DVD: "Cougar Town: The Complete Second Season"

September 13th, 2011 4:22pm EDT
Cougar Town
Recently, ABC Studios released Cougar Town: The Complete Second Season on DVD. Here's a look inside of the three-disc, twenty-two episode set.

The Show

I'm going to be honest: I don't like sitcoms.

Yet Cougar Town doesn't feel like your average sitcom to me. It feels like going back to an old neighborhood, with all the familiar faces amongst its troupe. The whole thing is like one big "Hey, it's that guy/gal" moment. I'm not just talking about Courteney Cox. There's Josh Hopkins (Ally McBeal), Brian Van Holt (S.W.A.T.), and Christa Miller and Ian Gomez (The Drew Carey Show) in the cas...

TV On DVD: 'Off The Map: The Complete Series'

August 25th, 2011 3:15pm EDT
Off The Map
This week, ABC Home Entertainment released the complete series of Off The Map, the next show from the people who brought you Grey's Anatomy. Here's my review of the three-disc set.

The Show

I'm going to be bluntly honest here: I don't like Grey's Anatomy. As such, I never watched its spinoff Private Practice. And knowing that it came from the same creative team, I didn't have high hopes for Off The Map.

Having watched the show now, I can see why it only lasted one season. It feels more like a shell of a program than a fully fleshed out one, even if you allow for it being a new serie...

TV on DVD: 'NCIS: Los Angeles: The Second Season'

August 25th, 2011 1:12pm EDT
NCIS
This week, CBS DVD released NCIS: Los Angeles - The Second Season. Here's my review of the six-disc set.

The Show

NCIS: Los Angeles has the potential to be something rare - the successful spinoff of a wildly successful spinoff of a successful TV series. While it hasn't quite caught my attention the way NCIS did, it's got a solid core in its two leads, James Todd Smith (aka LL Cool J) and Chris O'Donnell (who will always be Robin in Batman Forever to me), and recent Teen Choice Award winner Linda Hunt (The Unit). It's not reinventing the wheel, but I believe there's a place on televisi...

TV on DVD: 'Brothers & Sisters: The Fifth and Final Season'

August 25th, 2011 11:00am EDT
Brothers & Sisters
This week, ABC Home Entertainment released the fifth and final season of the award-winning Brothers & Sisters. Here's my review of the five-disc DVD set.

The Show

Brothers & Sisters (not to be confused with the late ABC series Sons & Daughters) feels familiar, because its cast is composed of many people who have had previous defining roles on television. Sally Field had her acclaimed guest stint on ER. Calista Flockhart will always be the title character from Ally McBeal to many people. Rachel Griffiths previously had a major role on Six Feet Under. These are people you've probably ...
