The 2013 Fall TV Preview: the New Shows on NBC

September 2nd, 2013 10:30am EDT
The Blacklist : NBC
Three and a half years ago I wanted to tell a story about a duck that didn't know how to swim. I'd title a documentary about NBC 'The Duck That Didn't Know How To Swim.' I wonder if the exeuctives bought the staff pizza and soda after reading the ratings for the premieres post-Olympic coverage. (Those numbers didn't hold).

Michael J. Fox and Sean Hayes represent NBC's glory days. The peacock relies on the actors again to lift them from the rubble it's been trapped under for a few years while helping to soften the blow of no The Office. I bet Community DOES get a sixth season. Bring on, mid...

2013 Fall TV Preview: the New Shows on ABC

September 1st, 2013 10:00am EDT
Agents of SHIELD
The critics slammed ABC's president, Paul Lee, after ABC's panel at the 2013 Television Critics Association tour. Critics slammed him for his lack of preparation, for his devotion to the company's buzzwords about four quadrant programming, and for his aloofness. ABC finished fourth in a key demographic last season. The executives at ABC must hope Whedon's box office success will translate to television success because the rest of their lineup of new shows is as bland as a carton of plain yogurt. Besides Whedon's series and a comedy series created by a former Community writer, the crop of ne...

The 2013 Fall TV Preview: The New Shows on The CW & CBS

August 30th, 2013 2:00pm EDT
The Originals
Les Moonves made a rare appearance at the TCAs and answered a popular question: how is The CW still functioning? The ratings are terrible. Mark Pedowitz points to social media scores and whatnot and talks up the new way of evaluating success, which is to ignore ratings and focus on likes and retweets or some such nonsense. Moonves bluntly said The CW continues to function because it doesn't lose money. Good enough for me.

The Originals' pilot aired in April. Of the other two new shows, Reign's pilot is better, but The Tomorrow People seems unlikely to fail whereas Reign is trying to captur...

SNL Wants The AT&T Guy, Maybe

August 23rd, 2013 3:10pm EDT
Beck Bennett
When you watch the AT&T commercials, it’s hard to pay attention to the tall man sitting at the table. Unarguably, he is overshadowed by the cute kids. But little do we know, the man isn’t just a stand it. His name is Beck Bennett and he is a real performer attempting to get his name out there, even if it means he must talk to kids about adding numbers to infinity.

Deadline is reporting that Bennett, along with John Milhiser, Noel Wells and Kyle Mooney, is a frontrunner prediction for the new cast addition to "Saturday Night Live." All comedians are performers from the Upright Citizens Brig...

Plus, the addition of Anna Faris and Allison Janney...

Michael J. Fox Doesn't Want To Be A Novelty On His New Show

July 28th, 2013 7:48am EDT
The Michael J. Fox Show
Michael J. Fox is coming back to television on “The Michael J. Fox Show.” Addressing his Parkinsons head on, he plays Mike Henry,  a newsman going back to work while managing his condition, just like the real Fox is doing with this show. Fox has been inspiring people since he revealed his diagnosis, but on the show he’s having fun with the public sympathy. The network puts together a schmaltzy promo reel with slow motion and inspiring music.

“That’s a little meta,” Fox said today in a session with the Television Critics Association. “We’re playing on that because it’s funny, the struggle w...

July 27th, 2013 4:30pm EDT
Mike O'Malley
Glee fans know Mike O’Malley as Kurt's (Chris Colfer) father, a single dad who dated Finn's (Cory Monteith) mother. O’Malley has a new show on NBC, Welcome to the Family, and when NBC presented the show to the Television Critics Association, O’Malley shared his thoughts on Monteith's death and plans to appear in the Glee episode about Finn's funeral.

“I hope to," O'Malley said. "I’m here doing Welcome to the Family and we shoot one episode five days a week, but Burt is a very, very important role to me. It’s been a great, great part and I’ve said to all those guys I’ll work early in the mo...
