LA Film Fest 2013 - 'Code Black' Helmer Ryan McGarry on Being A Doctor And Director

June 24th, 2013 10:10am EDT
La Film Fest 2013
Below is an interview conducted by the elder of the Coleman duo Michael from one of his favs at this year’s LA Film Fest 2013 – take it away dad!

The new documentary at this year’s fest titled "Code Black" has been seriously moving audiences.  Not only is it an unflinching look at ER doctors during a tough transition between old and new digs, but the film has gotten so much attention that it got an unprecedented four screenings at this year’s fest. (Plus it got top jury prize in the Documentary Category this year!)  Being wholly moved by the film I sought out Director and Doctor Ryan McGar...

LA Film Fest 2013 Review - 'Only God Forgives' Is Both Brilliant And Flawed

June 21st, 2013 12:20pm EDT
LA Film Fest 2013
First off let me say I’m a big Nicolas Winding Refn fan. From his early work on the famed "Pusher" series to his in-your-face brutality with "Bronson," Refn has an eye for visual violence like no one else. I was disappointed in "Drive," mainly due to the fact that I felt the mainstream story wasn’t a good movie marriage with Refn’s strange cinematic style. Now comes "Only God Forgives," a second teaming of Refn and star Ryan Gosling and on the up side this film is 100% pure Refn through and through. But within the films’ off world of slow visual sequences and crashing musical crescendos...

LA Film Fest 2013 - Director Sebastian Cordero Talks Space In Small Spaces With 'Europa Report'

June 20th, 2013 10:34am EDT
LAFF 2013
Taking on a movie set in outer space is hard work, but daring to do it on a small budget is even harder.  That was the challenge facing Ecuadorian filmmaker Sebastian Cordero, but with his knack for good storytelling and helping mold great performances the table was set for a memorable meal.  The end result, the new film "Europa Report" (showing at LA Film Fest 2013), delivers handsomely with stark visuals, a distinctively claustrophobic feel and an eclectic cast of characters that drive the emotion home.  It’s quite a feat for a filmmaker mostly known for creating realistic and gritty dram...

LA Film Fest 2013 - Director Alexandra Lescaze Talks About Doc 'All Of Me'

June 19th, 2013 1:40pm EDT
LAFF 2013
Obesity has always been a hot topic, especially in America where image is king.  But in the new documentary currently playing at this year’s LA Film Fest 2013 titled "All Of Me," Director Alexandra Lescaze goes beyond the obvious stuff to really dig deep into the life of those who struggle with weight and all its issues.  There are the more traditional issues like ladies who are looking for ways out and those who are having surgeries to help them on the road to better health, but there’s also an interesting examination of a lessor known fetish world where BBW (stands for Big Beautiful Women...

"Fruitvale Station" - There was no disappointment here as the film delivered on all counts showing why it was awarded prizes at both Cannes and Sundance Film Festivals.  This is the cream of the LAFF crop for me so far and I was not wrong when I ...
