Emeli Sande
Everything's looking up for Emeli Sande. Since the Scottish singer-songwriter released Our Version of Events in 2012, she watched it become the year's best-selling album in the UK, performed at the London Olympics, and enjoyed a huge international buzz. She's now featured on the soundtrack to Baz Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby, which opened Friday. BFTV caught up with the red-hot singer to get to know her better.

"The whole of last year was just such a crazy ride for me," Emeli reflected. "I feel like it's really surpassed my expectations and it's gone a lot quicker than I ever would've imagi...

The tragic outcome of last week's Boston Marathon bombings is still fresh in the minds of many who are suffering, yet there are some individuals ready to capitalize on it by shocking an already vulnerable populace into a state of confusion.

Amanda Palmer, former member of the Dresden Dolls, a two-man group hailing from Boston, is not known for her ability to fade gracefully into obscurity. In an interview with SPIN, she said "I hate being ignored" though she isn't lacking in publicity, unless you exclude the negative kind. She's been criticized most recently for hosting a crowd-sourced, mi...

Zoe Saldana To Replace Mary J. Blige In Nina Simone Biopic

August 16th, 2012 3:26pm EDT
Zoe Saldana
Zoe Saldana has replaced R&B superstar Mary J. Blige in a forthcoming biopic about jazz great Nina Simone.

Blige was cast in the movie adaptation of Cynthia Mort's Nina in 2010 and was due to begin filming last year.

However, the project suffered a funding setback which delayed the start of the shoot indefinitely, and the problems prompted Blige to step down from the role.

Producers have since resolved the investment issue and Saldana has signed up in the singer's place, days after news of the Avatar beauty's involvement in a new Simone biopic surfaced earlier this week.

She will le...

Temecula's Thornton Winery was the site of another satisfying evening of jazz as Earl Klugh and Kenny G put on an entertaining show on Sunday evening.

Grammy-winning guitarist Klugh (read our interview here) opened the evening with a varied arrangement of songs from his extensive catalog, ranging from more Latin influences to some of his well-known hits. Bobby Caldwell
Smooth jazz veterans Bobby Caldwell and David Benoit have decades of experience between them, and that showed in their combined effort at Temecula's Thornton Winery on Sunday night.

The pair were participating in Thornton's 24th annual Champagne Jazz Series, which brings the stars of the genre to an intimate Inland Empire setting. Despite the heat, which registered in the nineties, both Benoit and Caldwell put on a relaxed and engaging show.

Benoit opened the performance, mixing a selection of hits such as "Freedom at Midnight" and Vince Guaraldi's "Linus and Lucy" with tracks from his ...

Brian Culbertson's 'Dreams' Soars

June 12th, 2012 10:42am EDT
Dreams
Brian Culbertson is one of smooth jazz's best and brightest - which also raises my expectations for each album he puts out. Even by that high standard, new album Dreams is a success.

Dreams (released today) has that same funky, velvety-smooth sound that has made Culbertson so successful. He's consistently turned out the kind of music that you can easily lose yourself in. Take, for example, the album's second track "No Limits." It features guest vocals by Stokley Williams and is a perfect song for date night. It's the latest soulful, romantic ballad that Culbertson's become very good at, no...
