Yes, this film is best appreciated by intermediate to avid fans of the sci-fi genre (yeah, you, Trekkie), it is still pretty funny for beginners. Best advice is to watch Sigourney Weaver in the "Alien" series and then pop in "Galaxy Quest" or even "WALL-E" (she voiced Ship's Computer).
This is more of an alien-heavy film, but well worth your time. Tim Burton's puppeteering of this ensemble cast is downright perfection. The cast includes the Hollywood kitchen sink: Jack Nicholson, Glenn Close, Annette Bening, Pierce Brosnan, Danny DeVito, Martin Short, Sarah Jessica Parker (her best role), Tom Jones, Pam Grier, Natalie Portman, Jack Black. You get the picture.
Even if you dislike Douglas Adams' books, you can't help but enjoy this film. It brings some of the best of American and British players along for the ride, including: Mos Def, Helen Mirren, Bill Nighy, Alan Rickman (as the depressed Marvin), Stephen Fry, and even "Moon's" Sam Rockwell.
Star Wars as a franchise has become so incredibly saturated into our lives, that even if you haven't seen the films you will have fun with Mel Brooks' spoof. After all, in what other universe could Bill Pullman play Harrison Ford and do it so well!
