Evan (Eddie Murphy), a successful financial executive, devotes his time to his work instead of to his 7-year-old daughter. After his career goes on a downward spiral, he finds the solution to his problems in the imaginary world that his daughter creates.
"Imagine That" is directed by Karey Kirkpatrick, who has written children's movies like 2008's "The Spiderwick Chronicles." The film is co-written by Ed Solomon and Chris Matheson, a team that was first assembled back in 1989 to write "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure."
SEE IT, RENT IT, OR SKIP IT? Skip it. Over the last couple of years Eddie Murphy seems to have lost his edge as a comedian, committing to projects that appear to be more about making money than about entertaining people. For some reason, the man who made a name for himself with action movies like the "Beverly Hills Cop" and adult comedies like "Coming to America" has decided to make cookie cutter children's comedies. The result has been a number of bland movies I've had no interest in seeing. Add this one to that list.
Bennie, a young and naïve 17-year-old, journeys to Buenos Aires in search of his long lost older brother, who has been gone for over 10 years. A once-talented writer, his older brother Tetro is now only a shell of his former self. The discovery of Tetro's unfinished play might help Bennie find the answers to understanding their family's past and to renewing their brotherly bond.
Written and directed by Francis Ford Coppola, "Tetro" is Coppola's second film since his return to filmmaking. Originally Coppola planned to cast Matt Dillon for the role of Tetro, but Dillon was unavailable due to scheduling issues. Later, the director realized using Dillon would be too similar to his previous film "Rumble Fish," which also starred Dillon, so he decided to go with actor Vincent Gallo in the main role.
SEE IT, RENT IT, OR SKIP IT? Skip it. Plain and simple, this movie just looks pretentious and uninteresting. The fact that it's shot in black and white with bursts of color and is supposedly very personal to Francis Ford Coppola probably has something to do with that. While I didn't see his most recent movie "Youth Without Youth," I think Francis Ford Coppola's 10 year hiatus from directing definitely impacted him. I think he's still trying to get back on his game as a filmmaker.
