Ahh Chunk. You don't need to say much more than that. The name alone speaks volumes. With his jovial but maladroit nature and his penchant for Baby Ruths, Chunk is the quintessential movie fat kid. He spends the majority of his screen time blundering around panting for air, and winds up causing more problems for his fellow Goonies than he solves. But with such delightful character facets as the "Truffle Shuffle" and his hilarious confessions of a movie theater turned vomitorium, it's hard not to be tickled pink by the buffoonish but endearing ways of this "Never say die," super-sized Goonie.
This 1995 comedy starring Tom McGowan, Aaron Schwartz, and Ben Stiller is busting at the seams with an all-you-can-eat buffet's worth of movie fat kids. Basically, if you were a chubby teen in the mid-90's who was even slightly interested in acting, you were in this film. The basic premise of "Heavyweights" is this: a motley crew of bloated teens attend a summer camp that is devoted to helping overweight youths have fun while they shed a few pounds. But when the camp's new owner, ex-fitness guru Tony Perkis, comes up with a new fitness regime for the chubby campers, it doesn't appear that fat camp is going to be much of a cake-walk after all. The madcap escapades that ensue make "Heavyweights" a delightful treat that is chock-full of hilarious movie fat kids and is more satisfying than a snickers bar.
So, give it up one more time for all of the aforementioned movie fat kids of yester year, and let's also give a shout-out to all of the modern day stoutastic stars, such as Jonah Hill from "Superbad" and Nikky Blonsky from "Hairspray." Here’s hoping that these new-age, heavy-weight champs will keep the good name of the movie fat kid alive and well fed.
