"Star Trek: First Contact," the second film to feature the "Next Generation" cast, is my favorite movie about Captain Picard and his crew. Picard comes face to face with his archenemy and my favorite bad guys from the television show: the Borg.
A ruthless race of cyborgs only interested in "assimilating" life to their collective culture, the Borg are made much more ominous by their motto, "Resistance is futile."
As someone who was once captured and assimilated by the Borg, Captain Picard uses his knowledge of them to blow up their ship. The Borg escape however, and travel back in time to assimilate the human race.
The Enterprise also time travels to stop the Borg from preventing First Contact, the moment when humans successfully fly a warp drive space craft and in the process establish contact with alien life.
One of my favorite actors, James Cromwell plays Zefram Cochrane, the inventor of the warp drive. Cochrane, who spends most of his time drinking, struggles with accepting the role of inventor and humanitarian thrust upon him by the visitors from the future. In the end however, he assumes his role in history and starts living up to everyone's expectations.
