An essential ingredient is missing in Alfonso Cuarón's tale of a crippling global pandemic: nobody is really sick. There's plenty of misery to go around in Children of Men. People suffer from disease, poverty, and oppressive government regimes, but for the most part, everyone seems preoccupied with another matter: eighteen years prior everyone suddenly stopped having children. In a world whose youngest inhabitant is eighteen years old, the plight of others doesn't seem to matter anymore. Morality and empathy become obsolete when there's no legacy to leave behind. After all, when it's all over, who would be left to judge?
