Capote (2005) vs. Infamous (2006): Despite the fact that both films were developed simultaneously, when Infamous finally hit theaters - almost a year after Capote - it felt like a cheap knock-off. Even with Toby Jones' credible portrayal of real-life author Truman Capote and a cast that included Sandra Bullock, Sigourney Weaver and Gwyneth Paltrow, the film's late release brought inevitable comparisons to its critically acclaimed forebear and the transcendent acting of that film's leads, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Catherine Keener. Truman Capote himself once said, "You can do films for the fun of it, or the thrill of it, but certain films you can't do unless there's something driving you, something you have a passion for that will pull you through." Audiences clearly felt Infamous felt lacked the necessary passion and they stayed away in droves.
Bottom Line: Hoffman won an Oscar - and this round.
