Antz vs. A Bugs Life (1998): Flik (A Bug's Life) battled domineering grasshoppers and unpopularity; Worker Ant Z fought an oppressive caste system and his unrequited love for Princess Bala. When these two puny protagonists faced off in late 1998, they both came well-armed: With voice-acting from Woody Allen, Dan Aykroyd, Sly Stallone, Christopher Walken, Gene Hackman and Jennifer Lopez, Antz hit the big-star bonanza! Still, A Bug's Life was no slouch in that department - Kevin Spacey, Dave Foley, Denis Leary, Julia Louis Dreyfus, David Hyde Pierce Pierce and Brad Garrett -and flaunted spiffy Pixar animation to boot. Though A Bug's Life came out on top at the nationwide box office, strong turnout for both films proved there was plenty of room in the colony.
Bottom Line: Pixar sure makes perty pictures, but wash away the color and Antz's symbolic clash of a totalitarian society vs. proud individuality squashes its runty rival.
