John F. Kennedy, Jr. - Even those who scoffed at the idea of a Kennedy curse took painful pause when the scion of America's most famous political family, his glamorous wife Carolyn Bessette and sister-in-law Lauren disappeared into the Atlantic Ocean on July 16, 1999. An experienced pilot, Kennedy was flying the trio to his cousin's wedding in Hyannis, Massachusetts in a Piper Saratoga II HP; poor visibility and spatial disorientation were to blame for the crash. For a nation that had watched little John-John from the time of his birth in the White House, to his salutation (at three years old) of his father's flag-draped casket, through his undergraduate days at Brown and his struggle to pass the bar, his wooing of famous women like Daryl Hannah and Madonna, founding of his magazine George and a fantasy wedding to Bessette, the tragedy was both overwhelming and intensely personal. Senator Edward 'Ted' Kennedy said poignantly of his 38 year-old nephew, "We dared to think… That this John Kennedy would live to comb gray hair, with his beloved Carolyn by his side. But, like his father, he had every gift but length of years."
