Sharon Tate - Sadly, Tate is more famous for her horrific death than her brief life. Hailed as one of Hollywood's promising newcomers, the 26 year- old actress (Valley of the Dolls) was happily married to director Roman Polanski and two weeks away from giving birth in August 1969. In the wee hours of August 9th, Tate and four guests were murdered in her home, victims of serial killer Charles Manson and members of his 'family'. The brutal deaths turned Hollywood on its axis and struck fear into the free-wheeling community. Despite the devastation the incident caused in many lives, the death of Tate and her unborn son made one giant contribution to the justice system as we know it: Spearheaded by Sharon's mother, Doris Tate, amendments were made to California criminal law in 1982 allowing victims and families to make victim impact statements during sentencing and parole hearings. "My whole life has been decided by fate," Tate mused in an interview. "I think something more powerful than we are decides our fates for us. I know one thing - I've never planned anything that ever happened to me."
