Marvin Gaye - In 2008, Rolling Stone Magazine ranked Gaye on its list of 'The Greatest Singers of All Time'. It was an honor most assuredly deserved: Motown's highest solo recording artist in the 1960's, Gaye produced hit after hit, including "I Heard it Through the Grapevine," "Sexual Healing" and "Let's Get it On". Despite struggles with health, drug abuse and depression, the world was still stunned at the charismatic singer's sudden and violent death on April 1, 1984. Just one day before his 45th birthday, Gaye was fatally shot by his father Marvin Sr. after a heated argument. In perhaps his most influential song, "What's Going On," Marvin sings of war with lyrics that now haunt: "Father, father… We don't need to escalate. War is not the answer. For only love can conquer hate."
