3.) "America's Sweethearts" should have been a better movie. Yes, it was a box office success, although that is mostly due to the star studded cast in it: Julia Roberts, John Cusack, Billy Crystal, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Christopher Walken, and Hank Azaria.
Meant as a parody of the real Hollywood, it was about the superstar couple (Cusack and Zeta-Jones) who were 'America's Sweethearts' until she dumped him for another man (Azaria). Roberts plays her once-overweight sister/assistant who has been secretly in love with Cusack for years. While there are a few funny moments, and people in Hollywood probably snickered at how 'right' it was, it generally felt like a very insular and vapid film. Roberts character was limited to two traits: in love with sister's ex, and no-longer-overweight. Everyone in the movie was more of a caricature than an actual person, and while they intended that, it simply didn't work to the film's favor. Or Roberts favor, either.
2.) "The Mexican" is another film with a great cast, namely Julia Roberts and Brad Pitt, and it also did acceptably at the box office but suffered from dislike from critics and audiences. The problem with this film is that it is too chaotic and unclear, and Roberts and Pitt only have a few scenes together.
For a movie like this which is part romantic comedy and part road trip, you'd expect it to be exciting and sexy. Neither is true. Pitt gets his hands on a legendary gun so he can pay off his debt to a mobster, and his girlfriend who Roberts plays gets kidnapped by a gay bounty hunter (James Gandolfini) because he thinks she has the gun. There are plenty of convoluted plots, but the story behind the gun is ten times more interesting than the actual movie, and Roberts connects far better with Gandolfini than she ever did with Pitt. Frankly, it's just one big long mess.
1.) "Mary Reilly" is based on a book about the story of Jekyll and Hyde, and Roberts plays the title character who is a serving made in the house of Dr. Jekyll. John Malkovich is the tortured man, and Mary finds herself drawn to both the doctor and his dangerous 'assistant' Mr. Hyde.
This re-teamed the director and screenwriter of the very popular Dangerous Liasons, plus their stars Glenn Close and Malkovich, so it was a huge disappointment when the film bombed. It was made for $47 million dollars (where did that money go anyway?), and only made back $12 million worldwide. Ouch. Roberts was even nominated for a Razzie award due to her stilted line delivery and awkward attempt at big-eyed naiveté. It was a real shame, because the book was fantastic and the actors involved were impressive as well. Where did it go wrong?
