Some of the most alluring musicians are those who aren’t signed to a major label. Matthew Wade, best known as My Silent Bravery, is one of those alluring independent musicians – a singer/songwriter to be exact. While he may not be a household name, he should be, believe that!

Despite being under the radar, My Silent Bravery has no shortage of notable accomplishments where his resume is concerned. As an indie artist, he’s released four albums, spanning from 2007 (Uncharted Territory) to his most recent, Diamond From Coal, released August 11, 2014. Diamond From Coal features “Forever.” ...

Music Spotlight: Hoodie Allen – A Musician You Should Know

October 15th, 2014 2:20pm EDT
Hoodie Allen
Pop-rapper Hoodie Allen did something in 2012 that many dream of doing – landing a top 10 album on the Billboard 200. That’s right, Allen’s EP All American debuted at #10 and sold 28,000 copies. For a relatively unknown artist, Allen’s debut was nothing short of remarkable. Take that a step further and compare Allen’s sales then to the sales many more established artists are debuting with today, and Ivy League graduate Steven Markowitz’s accomplishment is even more buzz-worthy. Oh and by the way, he dropped that EP independently!

Two years later, Hoodie Allen returns bigger and bette...

Ann Hampton Callaway, From Sassy To Divine Shanachie
Perhaps only a few will recognize the name Ann Hampton Callaway off the top of their head, but definitely more than a few should know about Callaway's elite talent. Callaway sports a résumé that is stacked – absolutely loaded – from top to bottom. Perhaps she's not a household name compared to say pop artists, but her accomplishments deserve even greater recognition than she receives and certainly speaks for itself.

Music Spotlight: Troye Sivan – Youthful Alt-Pop Warrior

Music Spotlight: Troye Sivan – Youthful Alt-Pop Warrior
Often times, a teen musician offers one of two things as a recording artist – bubblegum and more bubblegum. Call it schmaltz. Maybe that assertion is over simplistic, but typically, teen musicians tend to appeal to audiences of their peers or even younger. Not many youngsters have the ability early on to crossover or appeal to more mature, older listeners. With numerous EPs released from burgeoning teen acts, most appealed to, well teens. No shade 5 Seconds of Summer, The Vamps, or Shawn Mendes.

For Troye Sivan, the script is a bit different. With Sivan, a multitalented 19-year ol...

Electronica Spotlight - Koven

Electronica Spotlight - Koven
Koven, the two person bass experiment out of London, has carved out a unique niche for themselves in the EDM market. The duo, consisting of Max Rowat and Katie Boyle, came to life in 2011 with 'Wake You Up' garnering internet and media attention through channels like UKF and Ministry of Sound.

Koven has a distinctly European feel. Their pace is slower, their beats a little more subdued, and their vocals a little more meaningful than many of their American counterparts. Their songs all feel like 'songs' rather than just music. Don't get me wrong - I'm actually partial to EDM where the voca...

Music Spotlight: Arika Kane – A Musician You Should Know
Some of the most talented artists in the music world are also some of the most underrated and unheralded. It shouldn’t be that way, but life isn’t exactly the fairest thing. Rising past the adversity of a music industry characterized by trends and sex appeal rarely wins commercial success, but sometimes being resolved not to cave in because it’s ‘easier’ is a virtuous, respectable thing. For Arika Kane, she seems determined to 'stay in her lane,' which is a good thing.

Arika Kane isn’t a household name – yet. She hasn’t sold millions of albums or quite established that dominant, comm...

Alternative Music Spotlight : The Temper Trap

Alternative Music Spotlight : The Temper Trap
Radio listeners will remember a couple years back when the incredibly infectious song "Fader" graced the airwaves constantly. That was the doing of a little Australian band known as 'The Temper Trap.' To this day, "Fader" is one of my favorite songs to listen to to pick my mood up.

But the Temper Trap remains busy. After releasing two very successful albums, 'Conditions' and 'The Temper Trap' the band is on their way to releasing a third studio album, set to release sometime in 2014.

Their musical sound isn't particularly unique - but they have a great vocal style, thanks to lead singer...

Alternative Music Spotlight : American Authors
Some of you may be familiar with 'American Authors' from their infectious song 'Best Day of My Life.' You can hear them slowly starting to trickle onto popular stations on the radio. They fall firmly in the same vein as Imagine Dragons, Smallpools and the Vamps.

Hailing from Boston, Massachusetts, the American Authors have a musical style that can only be described as indomitable, positive and incredibly optimistic. Almost every song they produce is not only upbeat, but has a fantastically happy dose of content at its' heart.

From songs like "Luck" to "Believer" the American Authors sing ...

Alternative Music Spotlight : MAGIC!
Like catchy pop-rock? Like reggae? You'll love Canadian reggae-fusion group MAGIC!

The Canadian foursome shares musical DNA with pop-rock bands like the 1975, but takes a lot of inspiration from traditional reggae. Their music is reminiscent of a more accessible, more fun version of 311 or Sublime. Though it has a great deal of reggae influence, it certainly has a predominantly British pop-rock feel - and with heavy hitters such as Bastille and the 1975 garnering so much fame, that's a very good formula to follow.

Lead singer Nasri Atweh is a unique fit for the role he fills in the grou...

Indie Folk Spotlight : Old Crow Medicine Show

Remedy : Old Crow Medicine Show
Like good ol' fashioned Americana style music like Bob Dylan and Tom Petty? Well, we've got some good news for you - it's coming back, in a big way. And there's few better bands to showcase the blue-blooded American hunger for Folk music than Old Crow Medicine Show.

Old Crow Medicine Show has flown mostly under the radar, getting their start in 1998 and influencing high profile bands such as Mumford and Sons with their unique, decidedly old school sound. They've been called everything, from bluegrass to alternative country, but really the only title that truly fits the band is 'folk' - and...
