Fall Out Boy Tops The Billboard 200: This Week In Music

January 29th, 2015 10:44am EST
Fall Out Boy
As unbelievable as it may be, for a second straight week, Taylor Swift is NOT sitting at number one. That statement is enough for all to utter a collective gasp of shock. Swift’s slippage is definitely Fall Out Boy’s gain, as the uniquely titled American Beauty/American Psycho scores FOB another number one album.

Fall Out Boy were previously in the penthouse for Infinity On High (2007) and Save Rock and Roll (2013). In sales alone, American Beauty/American Psycho outperformed their previous effort, delivering more robust January sales totals to the tune of 192,000 copies. Wonder wha...

How Did Meghan Trainor's Album Do On The Billboard 200?

Meghan Trainor Debuts Robustly Atop The Billboard 200
Meghan Trainor had a big week – particularly for the dead of January. After weeks of domination by chart queen Taylor Swift, Trainor seized the number one spot as Title sold a robust 195,000 copies. This does NOT happen in January folks! Throw in Billboard’s multi-faceted formula, and the impact of the “All About That Bass” singer’s debut is even more impressive. Meghan Trainor is doing big things and definitely had the most special week of the newbies on the chart. If only the other newbies had such numbers which to boast.

Besides Trainor’s bow atop the charts – not to mention the...

Rae Sremmurd Debut At Number Four on Billboard 200

Rae Sremmurd Debut At Number Five on Billboard 200: This Week In
While the Billboard 200 wasn’t bursting at the seams with new albums, the top ten does welcome one newbie to the fold. Southern rap duo Rae Sremmurd – who indeed go stupid – debut at #5 with 30,000 copies sold of the oddly titled SremmLife. Those sales numbers are quite modest, with the ‘units’ proving to slightly be more robust. Still, SremmLife certainly doesn’t appear to be a savior to album sales by any means. There is only one album that appears to be really selling.

Everyone may be tired of hearing the same thing, but guess who’s number one again? Taylor Swift of course! Even a...

Taylor Swift Makes It An Eight-Peat Atop Billboard 200

Taylor Swift Makes It An Eight In A Row Atop Billboard 200
Maybe DJ Khaled and Drake said it best: “No New Friends.” Applied to the current Billboard 200, the phrase is best attributed, “no new releases” of note. That said no one is shocked to hear that the invincible Taylor Swift rules the charts for an eighth non-consecutive week. Even with units and sales alike down from the previous week, 1989 still stood tall, selling 172,000 copies.

Swift was unopposed at the top spot, with the next closest album in sales (Guardians of the Galaxy Soundtrack) and impact (Nicki Minaj’s The Pinkprint) not coming anywhere close. 172,000 versus 70,000 copies ...

Taylor Swift Easily Keeps The Number One Spot Red Hot On The Billboard 200

Taylor Swift Easily Keeps The Number One Spot Red Hot On The Bil
She's bleeping unstoppable – like totally! As much as the talk of the queen – aka Taylor Swift – has grown old, she just keeps on dominating the music industry like it’s never been dominated before. She's beastly – in the most distinguished and ladylike manner possible. Cutting to the chase and the 'pure' sales total, Swift sold another 326,000 copies of 1989, impacting with an even more robust number of 'units'. Nobody seems to be able to 'shake off' Swift and if she was shakable, the industry would be left with a void - a "Blank Space" (get it?).

Speaking of “Blank Space,” it adds fur...

Nicki Minaj Settles For Number Two On The Billboard 200

December 26th, 2014 8:21am EST
Nicki Minaj
Not that it was ever going to be a contest, but Taylor Swift reclaimed her perch on the Billboard 200 without any trouble. 1989 sold 331,000 copies, an uptick in sales, and also experienced an uptick in the Billboard 200’s new ‘units’ system, to the tune of 375,000 units. But as we all know, doesn’t a queen always win? Swift has certainly been exactly what the music industry needed in a weak years of sales.

Nicki Minaj, who boasts the week’s top new album, settled for second place. The Pinkprint sold more respectably than expected, selling 194,000 copies, and impacting even more consi...

J. Cole Debuts Big On Billboard 200

December 18th, 2014 10:21am EST
J. Cole Forest Hills Drive
For J. Cole, the number one spot is a familiar one. For the third time in his career, J. Cole sits atop the Billboard 200. This time, he earns the largest sales of his career as 2014 Forest Hills Drive sold a robust 354,000 copies. Translated to the Billboard 200’s new formula of ‘units’, J. Cole’s latest impacted 375,000. Even more remarkable about J. Cole’s numbers is the lack of a single to drive album sales – “Apparently” was issued upon the album’s release as a single. Initially, the album was forecasted to sell more than 300,000 copies.

So with the debut of J. Cole, Taylor Swif...

Taylor Swift Still Tops On Billboard

December 11th, 2014 10:59am EST
Taylor Swift
The Billboard 200 may be completely revamped, but Taylor Swift’s constant stay atop the chart regardless of changes is unsurprising. After three consecutive weeks, a week in the runner-up slot, and last week’s return to the top, Swift now sits at five weeks at #1. Baller status – yep, definitely – she’s a playmaker. Overall, including overall “consumption” to quote the new chart language, Swift’s impact was 274,000. Again, only a portion of that were sales, specifically 230,000 copies. Regardless of technicalities, Swift rules.

But enough about Taylor, what about the newbies to th...

Danny Griego
Danny Griego got his unexpected start in music after he was struck by lightning. Literally. In order to rehab his right arm and hand, both paralyzed after the strike, he learned how to play guitar and the rest is history. The Arizona bred, Texas based singer/songwriter has worked with country legends like Hank Cochran, Red Lane and Max D. Barnes and cracked Billboard's Top 10 "Hot Sales" chart twice in 2014 with his single, "The Coast Is Clear," penned by Red Lane and Scotty Emerick. I had the opportunity to chat with Griego to learn more about his background and influences that led to his ...

Taylor Swift Rules The ‘New’ Billboard 200

December 4th, 2014 12:11pm EST
Taylor Swift
Out with the old and in with the new. The Billboard 200 has changed its charting formula that doesn’t just solely include albums sales, but also streaming and digital tracks. It’s definitely a contrast, but also makes complete sense given the current music climate. The days where it just comes down to album sales and nothing more are simply done – look at albums sales in 2014 alone. Still, the good old Nielsen Soundscan tabulates the sales via the Top Album Sales Chart.

But enough technicalities – time to jump right into the Billboard 200 – new or old. The holder of the number one sp...
