'Man Of Steel' Dominates Weekend Box Office, Breaks June Records

Man of Steel
New superman flick "Man Of Steel" made box office history after earning a staggering $113.1 million over the weekend.

The film, starring Henry Cavill as the iconic superhero, had the biggest June opening ever, beating the record set by "Toy Story 3" in 2010 (which made $110.3 million).

In addition, "Man of Steel," directed by Zack Snyder, earned $12 million from Thursday night screenings for a total of $125.1 million.

"Man of Steel" centers on a young man with extraordinary powers who tries to discover where he came from and what he was sent to Earth to do. Amy Adams also stars.

Home invasion horror-thriller The Purge pulled in a surprising $36.3 million at the box office over the weekend, landing the top spot and knocking Fast & Furious 6 into second place with a take of $19.7 million.

After a record box office take over Memorial Day weekend, Fast & Furious 6 has held off competition from Will Smith's sci-fi futurist tale After Earth to retain the top spot at the weekend box office.

The film pulled in another $34.5 million after opening with $120 million in ticket sales over the holiday weekend, while "After Earth" opened to a disappointing $27 million, slightly behind illusionist heist drama Now You See Me ($28.1 million), which also debuted this week.

'Fast & Furious 6' Dominates Record Memorial Day Weekend Box Office

Fast & Furious 6 has blown by the competition at the Memorial Day Weekend box office, taking in $122 million -- more than doubling the take of closest competitor, The Hangover Part III, which had $51.2 million in ticket sales ($63 million counting Thursday's shows).

$316 million in tickets were sold in the U.S. over the three day weekend, breaking the previous record of $277 million in 2011.

Star Trek Into Darkness held firm at the number-three spot, with $48 million in its second week; while Blue Sky Studios' latest animated film, Epic, opened at $42.6 million.

"Star Trek Into Darkness" easily took the top spot at the weekend box office, debuting with $70.6 million in ticket sales. The film added another $13.5 million from early showings on Wednesday and Thursday, bringing its five-day total to $84.1 million.

Mark Wahlberg's "Pain & Gain" topped the weekend box office, earning $20 million in ticket sales.
