The Thing
Happy Halloween! Welcome to this surprise Radical Retro Movie Review. Recently I was thoroughly disappointed by “The Thing,” a prequel to the John Carpenter film by the same name. Since the 2011 counterpart turned out to be such a dud, I thought I should revisit the 1982 version and discuss what still makes it such a compelling masterpiece today.

What most people don’t know, is that John Carpenter’s “The Thing” was actually a remake of a 1951 film called “The Thing from Another World,” which was based itself, on a short story by John W. Campbell Jr. Carpenter was able to effectively ...

Radical Retro Movie Review: ‘Stripes’ Celebrates 30 Years Of Laughs

June 26th, 2011 10:00am EDT
Stripes Turns 30
Try to imagine your worst day in recent memory. Really picture it. Get that horrific experience fresh in your mind. Does it compare to losing your job, your car, your significant other, and your pizza all in the same day? Chances are, probably not.

All these calamities pile up for John Winger (Bill Murray) in director Ivan Reitman’s comedy “Stripes,” which turns 30 years old today. Out of everything, what stings the most for John, are his girlfriend’s words when she dumps him, “You’re going nowhere John, and it’s just not that cute anymore…” John attempts to use humor to save face ...

Radical Retro Movie Review: 'Raiders Of The Lost Ark' Turns 30

Raiders of the Lost Ark Turns 30
Author’s note: This film, which I’m about to review, is one of the most influential from my childhood. From the first frame, to the end credits, I sat captivated, as I watched it time after countless time. In fact, my VHS copy got so much use, that it’s barely playable now.

“Raiders of the Lost Ark” which turned 30 on Sunday, had a profound impact on me, stimulating my imagination and inspiring a passion for movies that I still possess today as an adult. It is from this perspective, that I share my opinion with you.

The Paramount Pictures mountaintop logo dissolves into an actual peak,...

Review: 'Beginners' 'Two Jews On Film' Almost Agree On This Indie Gem (Video)

May 31st, 2011 2:15pm EDT
Beginners
By Joan Alperin Schwartz: All I can say is...'Beginners' had me from the moment Ewan McGregor looks deep into the eyes of his newly acquired Jack Russel Terrier and says...'Look it's lonely out here so you and I better learn how to talk to each other'. The camera does a close up on the dog and the caption on the screen reads...I understand 150 words but I don't speak any.

Get the picture. 'Beginners' written and directed by Mike Mills is one of those independent quirky films that you can't help but fall in love with. At least I did.

Oliver (Ewan McGregor) a graphic artist, goes to a p...

Tron 1
When Disney’s “Tron” zoomed in theaters during the summer of 1982, audiences were whisked away on an unprecedented journey into the digital space of video games and computers. Its unique storytelling experience rests mainly on its groundbreaking special effects, which mix live action and computer animation. With a sequel “Tron: Legacy” arriving in theaters this week nearly 30 years later, it feels appropriate to examine the impact of the original on popular culture.

It was the writer and director Steven Lisberger’s exposure to the videogame Pong that got him fascinated with concept o...

Radical Retro Movie Review: 'Total Recall'

June 29th, 2010 2:19pm EDT
total recall
There are three key ingredients you can find in Paul Verhoeven’s best films: excessive violence, gratuitous nudity, and biting social commentary. All of these items can be found in “Total Recall” whose plot based on a short story by the late author Philip K. Dick. This film which turned 20 this month, melds Verhoeven’s style with Philip K. Dick’s ability to craft compelling fiction to create a movie that is equal parts sci-fi and action adventure.

Arnold Schwarzenegger stars as Doug Quaid, a lowly construction worker having repeat dreams of life on the Mars colony. What’s strange is tha...
