New Releases - Week Of July 15th

NCAA Football 09NCAA Football 09 features a revamped graphics engine for improved animations, online dynasties supporting up to 12 players, and a more heightened atmosphere than in previous versions. The new graphics engine allows players to freely break in or out of moves instead of having to wait until each spin, juke, or stiff-arm finishes its animation cycle. The end result is designed to give players more direct control on the field, allowing them to quickly read and react to situations as they develop. Another new option is the ability to "ice the kicker." Implementing this strategy causes the kicking meter to turn frosty, partially obstructing the power meter, and changes the default camera angle to a view closer to the field. NCAA Football 09

New Releases - Week Of July 8th

Civ RevolutionPlayers are invited to conquer the world in an afternoon, with the first version of Sid Meier's Civilization designed for consoles, Sid Meier's Civilization Revolution. Civilization may be the most archetypically "PC" game series in all of PC gaming, so significant adjustments were made in refitting it for Xbox 360, PS3, DS, and Wii. Developed from the ground up by Firaxis Games, Civilization Revolution aims to streamline the Civ experience without dumbing it down. Civ vets will find simpler choices among such granular-level gameplay elements as tech tree advances, tile production, and military units, but the global-level influences of technology, economy, and armed forces interact with the same complexity as they do in other versions of the game.

Battlefield Bad CompanyBattlefield: Bad Company takes the open-level play of the online, multiplayer-oriented Battlefield games and makes it more personal -- and more profitable. In a relatively extensive single-player campaign, gamers take the role of a renegade soldier in the near-future, who joins three of his brothers-in-arms to go AWOL in search of personal fame and fortune. A variety of land, air, and sea craft become available during their adventures, along with an arsenal of powerful weaponry.

As seems to be common among modern mercenary video game heroes out for profit, the soldiers of Bad Company have an appetite for destruction. The game features destructible environments, which become part of the gameplay. Buildings, barriers, and the earth itself can be disrupted with the right firepower and players are encouraged to use their ability to alter the battlefield in order to complete mission objectives.

New Releases - Week Of June 17th

Secret Agent ClankThe quiet, robotic half of Sony's bolt-busting duo finally gets a chance to let his metal muscles shine in Secret Agent Clank . When his Lombax friend gets framed for a crime he didn't commit, Clank dons his finest tuxedo and goes into full cloak-and-dagger mode. Though the frantic combat and bolt-gathering aspects of the series continue, Secret Agent Clank introduces a new stealth element that also finds players avoiding searchlights and dipping in and out of shadows. The franchise's gadget-heavy weaponry also gets a stealthy, James Bond-esque twist, as Clank can now unleash cufflink bombs, a bow-tie boomerang, and an ink-shooting pen to blot out surveillance cameras. If gamers can deftly execute a quick time event, Ratchet's clandestine comrade can also dish out some severe punishment in the form of stealth takedowns. From the same High Impact Games crew that developed Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters, Secret Agent Clank offers fans of the series their first chance to play primarily as Clank, though gamers also get a few opportunities to control Ratchet and the cowardly Captain Quark.

New Releases - Week Of June 10th

MSG 4Solid Snake returns as an older, battle-hardened veteran in Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. Series creator Hideo Kojima reprises his role as director as he brings the critically acclaimed stealth-action series to PlayStation 3 with a number of new elements. The futuristic setting now features expansive, war-torn environments with rival nations vying for control over both territory and technology. Sporting grizzled hair, wrinkles, and a mustache, the weary Snake also has an eye patch that pays homage to his character's inspiration, Escape from New York's antihero Snake Plissken.

Christened "Solid Eye" by Kojima, the eye patch serves as a multifunctional display that allows Snake to view infrared signals, radar, and more. As Snake sneaks through bombed out areas, interior locales, and other detailed environments, players will be able to shape the cinematic story line through their in-game actions. Missions can be accomplished in multiple ways, and Snake's decisions during the course of play will influence how characters react to him. As in previous games, players can attack enemies in close quarters combat, wear disguises, perform acrobatic moves, use a variety of inventive gadgets, and call on familiar characters for assistance and information.

New Releases - Week Of June 3rd

Ninja Gaiden IIStrong, silent Ryu Hayabusa sharpens his sword for another acrobatic adventure through deadly environments in the exclusive sequel Ninja Gaiden II on Xbox 360. The action once again takes place from a third-person perspective set behind the nimble ninja, with highly cinematic showdowns taking place amidst exotic locales. Acclaimed designer Tomonobu Itagaki has altered the original title's fast-paced combat system to incorporate new weapons, attacks, and special finishing moves called "obliteration techniques."

In an attempt to appease those who thought the original game was too challenging, the developers have included an automatic health regeneration system and a choice of four difficulty levels, ranging from "acolyte" to "master ninja." The all-new story mode follows Ryu in his trek from Tokyo to New York to a demon-populated netherworld. While the game is still strictly a single-player experience, Xbox Live subscribers will be able to record, modify, and post film clips of their most manic maneuvers for the online world to enjoy.

Death Jr.: Root of EvilBackbone Entertainment brings its 2006 PSP title back to life in this Wii version of the comically ghoulish Death Jr.: Root of Evil. As in its earlier handheld iteration, Root of Evil for the Wii lets players take control of Death Jr., or his schoolyard sweetheart Pandora, as they embark on nearly 20 levels of classic comedic platform gaming. Players must help the deathly duo dispatch 45 different kinds of enemy and attempt to rescue DJ's dad all while completing their school science project on time. Gamers can wield DJ's scythe or Pandora's whip to unleash devastating combo attacks using the Wii Remote and Nunchuk, or they can dole out destruction with unusual weapons like flaming toilet paper and C4 hamsters. Death Jr.: Root of Evil has been cleaned up a bit, featuring five times as many polygons as the PSP version, and the more polished level design lets two players try out the game in local split-screen co-op action.

Age of ConanPlayers step back to a simpler, darker, more brutal age as they take the online roles of wild warriors and dark wizards in Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures. The persistent-world role-playing game is based on the books by Robert E. Howard and is set in Hyboria, under the rule Conan, King of Aquilonia. Unlike nearly all mainstream MMO games before it, Age of Conan is rated "M" by the ESRB, and preserves the grim content, unflinching style, and graphic tone of the Conan novels and films.

Aside from its rugged setting, Age of Conan is distinguished from other online role-playing games by its fast-paced combat system, in which players have opportunity to direct each swing and thrust of their characters' weapons. Level progression expands character customization options, with hundreds of new attacks, combos, and spells becoming available. Away from the battlegrounds, the game's crafting system allows characters to create a range of objects and items used in the game, from weapons and armor to buildings and businesses.

The mini-games included are Beach Volleyball, Soccer, Badminton, Basketball, Archery, Curling, Snowboard Cross, Figure Skating, Supercross, and Kart Race. Each game can be played solo or in multiplayer mode, and all of the disciplines feature a unique "Deca Challenge" that serves as something of a training mode.

New Releases - Week Of April 29th

Grand Theft Auto IVThe most anticipated game of 2008 expands the open-world action introduced in the groundbreaking Grand Theft Auto III to a new level of detail. The next-gen debut of the unapologetically violent series stars new protagonist Niko Bellic, a criminal looking for a fresh start and perhaps a shot at redemption. Niko is lured to the bustling Liberty City from Europe by his reckless cousin Roman, who sells him on a life of luxury with quick cash, fast cars, and faster women. Roman has considerably overstated his wealth, however. The cousin is indebted to the type of people who don't take "no" for an answer, and he desperately needs Niko's help.

So begins Grand Theft Auto IV, which returns players to a revamped Liberty City teeming with pedestrians, vehicles, and criminal activity. The game's tongue-in-cheek version of the Big Apple features replicas of four boroughs as well as a portion of New Jersey. While the environment is smaller than the area found in 2004's Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, the setting is more densely packed, offering a greater amount of things to see and do. A new physics model forms the backbone of the advanced 3D engine, allowing players to interact with objects and characters in more lifelike ways. The storyline is designed to offer more meaningful choices as well, with Niko able to access key contacts and messages at any time with his camera-equipped cell phone.

Battle of the BandsReleased in an era of rhythm-game renaissance, Battle of the Bands for Nintendo's Wii might be considered THQ's answer to Activision's Guitar Hero and EA's Rock Band games for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. For a winning performance, the player attempts to hit the right notes as they scroll towards the front of the screen in familiar fashion, but Battle of the Bands does not make use of additional music instrument accessories, instead calling on players to make the right gestures at the right time with the Wii Remote.
