Michael Douglas Reveals Throat Cancer Caused By Performing Oral Sex On Numerous Women
Michael Douglas has blamed his 2010 battle with throat cancer on oral sex.
The Behind the Candelabra star revealed in a new interview with London's The Guardian that orally pleasuring numerous women during his promiscuous past led him to contract the HPV (human papillomavirus).
Douglas originally thought the stress of his son Cameron's court battle over heroin possession and meth dealing -- ultimately landing him a five year prison sentence (later doubled for smuggling drugs into prison), had contributed to the development of the cancer.
"Without wanting to get too specific, this particular cancer is caused by HPV (human papillomavirus), which actually comes about from cunnilingus," Douglas said. "I did worry if the stress caused by my son's incarceration didn't help trigger it. But yeah, it's a sexually transmitted disease that causes cancer. And if you have it, cunnilingus is also the best cure for it."
Throat cancer caused by HPV has a high cure rate, according to Dr. Marshall Posner, director of the Head and Neck Oncology Center at Mount Sinai Medical Center.
"We can cure this cancer much easily than any other head and neck cancer, for example from smoking or drinking," Posner told the New York Daily News. "The cure rates are so good ...80%-95% cure rate."
Dr. Posner also confirmed that HPV "can be transmitted from fingers, saliva, genitalia" and "any kind of intimate physical contact."
Douglas often battled claims that he was a sex addict before marrying actress Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Posner says that it can take two to four decades after exposure to HPV develop his type of cancer.
He also said that Zeta-Jones is safe and at zero risk of getting cancer from her husband.
“It would be because something else in her body, that kicks it in, you don't want to scare people out of having normal intimate relations,” he said.
