Cyndi LauperCyndi Lauper has won praise from New York's theatre critics who have hailed her Kinky Boots musical as "surprising and fun" and packed with "audience-hugging charisma" following its Broadway opening.

The singer has written the score for the stage show, which tells the story of an English shoe factory which is revived with the help of a drag performer, and it enjoyed a brief run in Chicago, Illinois last year before its big opening in New York City on Thursday night. Lauper's production previously won over reviewers in Chicago and now she has managed to charm the notoriously tough critics in the Big Apple.

Ben Brantley of the New York Times wrote of Lauper's score "(It) performs like a pop star on Ecstasy. Try to resist if you must. But... you might as well just give it up to the audience-hugging charisma of her songs." He adds, "This show comes rushing at you head-on, all but screaming: 'Love me! Love me!' It's a shameless emotional button pusher."

The New York Daily News' theatre reviewer, Joe Dziemianowicz, writes, "The real star of this show... is Cyndi Lauper, who wrote the songs... Lauper's first Broadway score is, like her, multi-colored, surprising and fun... The production moves lickety-split, and (the) dancing drag queens - yes, reminiscent of recent La Cage aux Folles and Priscilla, Queen of the Desert - are eye-poppers."

Elisabeth Vicentelli of the New York Post insists Lauper has a "natural knack" for musicals, adding, "If the show's about people coming into their own, Lauper's leading the pack."

The show also won rave reviews from  trade publication Variety, with theatre critic Marilyn Stasio writing, "Never underestimate the power of a good-bad musical, which can make consenting adults yearn to be dancing queens and adolescent witches and, in the case of Kinky Boots, drag queens in stiletto-heeled footwear... Cyndi Lauper's score has the driving energy and uplifting spirit of a roller derby... (audiences) are likely to love it to death."
