Jason MolinaMagnolia Electric Company frontman Jason Molina has died from organ failure, aged 39.

The singer/songwriter passed away on Saturday night in Indianapolis after a lengthy battle with alcoholism.

In 2011, his bandmates launched an appeal on the group's website soliciting donations to help the uninsured musician pay his medical bills after Molina had spent almost two years in and out of rehab.

He formed Magnolia Electric Company in 2003, taking the title from his former group Songs: Ohia's final album.

The band released four albums between 2005 and 2009, and Molina released a solo album, called Autumn Bird Songs, last year.

A statement from officials at his record label Secretly Canadian reads: "We're going to miss Jason. He was generous. He was a one of a kind. And he had a voice unlike any other."
