Robert De Niro Robert De Niro is bringing A Bronx Tale back to Broadway as a musical 20 years after stepping behind the camera to direct a movie adaptation of the play.

The Goodfellas star bought the film rights to the story after seeing Chazz Palminteri perform his one-man show in New York in the 1990s, and the 1993 movie marked his directorial debut.

Now, it has emerged De Niro is to bring the play back to Broadway with a musical twist.

The Oscar winner will direct the new production, which will feature music by Bon Jovi keyboardist David Bryan and choreography by Sergio Trujillo, the dance genius behind Jersey Boys and The Addams Family, according to New York Post gossip column Page Six.

Palminteri, who wrote and performed the original play, will be re-writing the show and music mogul Tommy Mottola is producing. The play was last revived on Broadway in 2007.

A Bronx Tale charts the story of a young boy from a working class family who becomes involved in organised crime.
