Katy Perry and John Mayer are not engaged. The ruby ring that sparked wedding bell rumors earlier this week was just a Valentine's Day gift from Mayer.

On Thursday night Perry wore the ring on her wedding finger, prompting gossips to suggest that Mayer had proposed on the most romantic day of the year. The singer's reps neither confirmed nor denied reports of impending nuptials.

However, a representative for Santa Barbara, Calif., jeweller Daniel Gibbings has revealed Mayer bought the ring as a Valentine's Day surprise for the pop star.
 
The rep told People.com that Mayer was "really super nice" while shopping for his girlfriend.
