Prosecutors handling Lindsay Lohan's assault case in New York have delayed the hearing to give themselves more time to investigate the allegations.

The "Mean Girls" star is accused of punching Tiffany Mitchell, 28, during a night out at the Club Avenue venue in Manhattan in November. She was arrested after the incident and booked on a third-degree misdemeanor assault charge.

Lohan was due in court to face the charge on Monday morning, but prosecutors announced the case has been delayed to give them more time to prepare.

Editors at TMZ.com report prosecutors stated, "The investigation into this case is continuing."

Lohan did not attend the brief hearing at Manhattan Criminal Court, but her attorney Mark Heller tells the website his client is "a victim of someone trying to capture their 15 minutes of fame."
