Freida Pinto

Actress Freida Pinto is fighting for improved women's rights in Africa after an emotional visit to Sierra Leone.

The Slumdog Millionaire star has signed up as a global ambassador for Plan International USA's Because I am a Girl initiative, which aims to set up sustainable projects in developing countries giving young females access to facilities such as clean water, food and education.

Pinto visited Sierra Leone last month, and is determined to help bring about change after the trip.

She says, "I have always been a true believer in the power of every individual, especially every girl. Last month, I had the amazing opportunity to travel with Plan (sic) to Sierra Leone and see firsthand how investing in a girl transforms an entire community."

"The treacherous web of barriers girls face worldwide is endless. But if we educate and empower girls, they will reach their fullest potential, pulling themselves and their families out of poverty."

"I am truly inspired by the determination and courage of the girls I've met. I'm so excited to be working with Plan (sic) to bring about real change for these for girls and their families. When you invest in a girl, you really can change the world."
