Actress/activist Geena Davis has been appointed a special envoy for the United Nations.

The Thelma & Louise star is a longtime campaigner for gender equality and even founded the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media to encourage positive portrayals of women.

Now, she has been unveiled as the new spokesperson for the U.N.'s Tech Needs Girls campaign, which aims to raise awareness of the role technology can play in empowering women.

She says in a statement, "This role will enable me to take the work I'm doing to a much bigger scale globally, through developing and consulting on strategies to advance gender equality and the empowerment of girls and women..."

"It's incredibly important to get more women and girls connected to technology."
