Lady Gaga's upcoming gig in Indonesia has been endangered with cancellation after police in Jakarta demanded officials revoke her performance permit.

The Poker Face hit-maker is due to take her Born This Way Ball world tour to the city next month, but she has been hit with a wave of protest from religious campaigners in the notoriously conservative country, who are opposed to her racy lyrics and saucy costumes.

Police officials in Jakarta have now recommended Lady Gaga's permit for her performance at the Bung Karno Stadium in Senayan, central Jakarta be withheld by the National Police.

A spokesman for the Jakarta Metropolitan Police says, "Our proposal is based on the opinions of Muslim groups who believe that her stage act is not compatible with the culture of our country because we are Muslim. Have you seen her videos? She exposed too much of her skin."

National Police spokesman Boy Rafli Amar insists a final decision on the gig is yet to be made, adding, "There's still no decision whether to ban the concert."

Nevertheless, Lady Gaga has received support from Indonesia's largest Muslim organization, the Nahdlatul Ulama, who claim banning the pop star will be a step too far.

Muhammad Imdadun Rahmat, deputy secretary general of Nahdlatul Ulama, tells Thejakartapost.com, "The police should not have gone as far as banning the concert. They should not intervene against the freedom of expression."

The superstar was previously hit with protests in South Korea and she was forced to perform in Seoul in the face of a demonstration outside her show last month.
