Pretty Smallville star Kristin Kreuk has been cast as the female lead in a new Beauty & The Beast TV series, according to industry reports.

The actress, who played Lana Lang in the hit Superman show, will portray a modern-day New York homicide detective who befriends the survivor of a military experiment-turned-city vigilante in the new drama, reports Deadline.com.

The series will be loosely based on the hit 1980s TV drama Beauty & The Beast, which starred Linda Hamilton and Hellboy actor Ron Perlman.

There's also a Beauty & The Beast movie in the works, which Guillermo del Toro will direct. Reports suggest Harry Potter star Emma Watson will play his leading lady.
