Olympic swimming star Michael Phelps has split from his longtime girlfriend Nicole Johnson.
 
Gold medallist Phelps and former Miss California USA Johnson called it quits just before the Christmas period, after three years of dating.
 
Johnson had moved to the athlete's home city of Baltimore, Maryland to strengthen their relationship, but she's now returned to Los Angeles.
 
Pageant executive Keith Lewis tells the New York Post, "Johnson is very interested in pursuing her career. Michael is tied up with swimming. Over the course of time, Baltimore didn't hold the same opportunity that LA did."
