Georgetown University Offers The Course 'Sociology Of Hip Hop: Jay-Z'

December 5th, 2011 8:53am EST

Jay-ZHip-hop fans can now study Jay-Z thanks to a radical new course at Georgetown University.

Author and professor Michael Eric Dyson is the man behind the "Sociology of Hip-Hop: Jay-Z" initiative, which focuses on the rap superstar's music and his business and fashion line successes.

Dyson insists his latest class has become a big hit because it offers students the chance to listen to great music and discuss topics like racial and gender identity, as well as capitalism.

He tells USA Today, "It just happens to have an interesting object of engagement in Jay-Z - and what better way to meet people where they are? It's like Jesus talking to the woman at the well. You ask for a drink of water, then you get into some theological discussions."

Dyson has previously taught classes on Tupac Shakur and Marvin Gaye at the University of Pennsylvania, but he's really enjoying the analysis of Jay-Z, adding, "I think he's an icon of American excellence."
