Michael LohanLindsay Lohan's estranged father has pleaded no contest to domestic violence charges in Florida and agreed to undergo four months of counseling.

Michael Lohan will also participate in a domestic violence intervention program and he has been ordered to stay away from ex-girlfriend Kate Major as part of a plea deal agreed in a Tampa court on Wednesday.

Lohan, 51, was was accused of beating the 29-year-old journalist during a fight in October.

The reality TV star was told not to make any contact with Major at a previous hearing into the case, but he was accused of violating the terms of his release by making a harassing phone call to her just hours after being released from jail.

Last week Lohan was formally charged with domestic violence and violation of a domestic injunction for the first arrest, and an additional two charges of resisting arrest without violence and violating a condition of pretrial release as a result of the second.

His ex, who was in court on her birthday, told the judge that she thought Lohan would benefit from a treatment program and not jail.

She said, "I think he needs help. Keeping him in jail would be hurting him more."

If Lohan fails to stay away from Major he will be jailed for two years.
